Curly hair is complicated, but this salon owner knows how to cut it
REXBURG – Getting a haircut is a difficult task for people with curly hair. Just ask Kylie Howard, who was born with curly hair.
Parker, a 32-year-old woman, owns the Collective Curl Salon & Suites at 556 Trejo, Rexburg. The business will open in June 2021 and specializes in helping customers with curly hair look their best.
Before opening the store, Howard told EastIdahoNews.com that many women drove to Utah for these services because they weren’t available in Idaho. Since opening, her customers have tripled hers.
“We have hundreds of clients now,” Howard says. “We get clients from Star Valley. We have regulars who come from Montana. They come from all over the world just to get a certified curly haircut.”
Getting certified specifically for curly hair was an eye-opening experience for Howard. She says it was a completely different approach to cutting her hair.
“I didn’t even realize what was in my hair. I was used to blow-drying, straightening, and cutting,” she says.
For straight hair, the usual process is to wash and brush your hair before cutting it.
And it’s a time consuming process.
“Reservations can last up to two hours, depending on needs and thickness,” she says.
According to her, a focus on texture is key and aims to avoid a tree-shaped look with wavy or curly corners on the face.
Demand for her services grew rapidly, and early on, she was unable to take on all the clients she wanted due to sheer demand.
Today, her salon has a team of stylists that allow her business to grow and thrive.
She says it’s rewarding when a first-time client comes in and leaves satisfied.
“Some people don’t realize how curly their hair really is, but many people shed tears of gratitude for being able to accept themselves (and their looks). ‘ explains Howard.
Still, Howard says many people who don’t know her salon exists can benefit from her services.
If you still drive to Utah or another state, Howard says she can help.
“You don’t have to drive that far,” she says. “I can help this need in this area.”
The Collective Curl Salon is open Monday through Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 AM to 7 PM. For reservations or more information, please call (208) 206-2552. You can also visit the website.
