Rockland — A salon that specializes in dreadlocks, gives the community a twist on natural hair care and the salon experience.
Warm lighting, lush green plants and friendly faces greet you as you enter DreadGuru.
DreadGuru owner Alberte Fernelus said:
Located at 331 Center Avenue in Rockland, this salon invites all hair textures and ethnicities into a dreadlocks journey.
“We have all types of people who come to us to start a new journey. We don’t discriminate here. Everyone is welcome and accepted as they are,” said Fernelus.
Fernelus opened DreadGuru in 2019 after being booked and busy with appointments with friends and family. Before officially opening the salon, Fernelus took clients from the comfort of his Brockton home as a part-time hobby.
She decided to quit her day job as a social worker to pursue a new career, until her children began calling her a “terror guru” and her clientele expanded exponentially.

“People introduced me to friends and family, which grew over time. The transition from home to a physical salon was easy,” says Fernelus.
Fernelus was full every week, so the idea wasn’t crazy.
“There aren’t many dreadlock salons in the area, and that’s what sets us apart,” says Fernelus.
The entrepreneur worked at a friend’s salon and stepped into the hair care industry before going completely solo.
Loyal customers were thrilled to learn that the former social worker had started working for himself and found a retail space.

The first location was under the Islano School of Cosmetics in Brockton. The salon had his two sides, one for regular services and one dedicated to dreadlocks.
Fernelus has moved to the Rockland location and has been working there for three years.
“I specialize in all fears,” said Fernelus.
From rewinding and detoxing to fixing broken dreadlocks, Fernelus can do it all.
One of my main focuses is teaching my clients how to maintain their natural hair. The salon has a section that sells premium, high-quality salon products that most stores don’t carry.
“She’s a mother figure not only to those who get their hair done, but to all of her clients. It’s always a good environment with great energy,” says Rebecca Bell, dread specialist at DreadGuru.
In the future, Fernelus plans to open two new businesses just a few feet away from the salon.
Restaurants Fab5 Restaurant Bistro and Element Wellness Center and Juice Bar. Both businesses will be in the same square as the salon.
The center offers ancient healing techniques, yoga, crystal healing, sauna, sea salt therapy, infrared therapy, herbal medicine, Botox, and IV drips.
The restaurant will be a fusion of Mexican and Haitian cuisine.
