glass onion As millions of fans watched and re-watched the murder mystery film, it became a huge hit for Netflix. Much of this is thanks to his performance of Janelle Monae dual as Andy and Helen Brand. The big reveal of Helen recruiting Benoît Blanc to solve Andy’s murder to play the deceased twins threw many viewers on a loop. Because I couldn’t decide otherwise. To the surprise of many viewers, Monáe revealed a subtle hint that people may have missed that it was Helen instead of Andy in Miles Bourne’s Murder Mystery Getaway.
Watching Netflix’s Murder Mystery, many fans speculated how they could distinguish women other than Helen’s first appearance and Alabama accent. Worked (outside Miles, of course). While viewers and other characters were ignorant until the final act, the Grammy-nominated singer spilled to Variety the subtle ways they and director Rian Johnson distinguish the twins.
Helen’s wig is the one she was talking about with Leanne. When she’s playing Andy and no one knows it’s her, her hair part is on the other side, the idea being that she’s a mirror image of her sister.
Well, that little thing makes me want to go back and watch mystery comedies again and spot the differences. Helen and Andy were very different, so it makes sense that there would be some nuances in their hairstyles: Helen was an elementary school teacher in Alabama, and she lived a frugal life. Andy, on the other hand, was a trendy big tech jetsetter whose style and her demeanor matched the New York corporate environment. Of course, the twins shared the ability to use rich bitch accents, which made the switcher all the more believable.
Monáe gave another hint about the difference between Helen and Andy’s hairstyles. Helen had to cut her hair and wear wigs to mimic the trendy New York style of her late twins. In contrast to her Andy’s more professionally manicured brows, Helen’s brows were thicker and the difference extended to her brows.
Monáe’s performance as Brando’s twin has been well received by critics and viewers alike. They received multiple nominations for Best Supporting Actress this season, including National Board of Review, Critic’s Choice, NAACP Image and Satellite Awards. There’s also a bit of Oscar buzz around multi-hyphens, which will be nominated for an Academy Award in a few weeks.
