Everyone knows Scott Thompson’s comedy style. Well, they may not know the name Scott Thompson, but most people know him by his stage name, Carrot Top.
Thompson has been a comedian for over 30 years and has entertained Las Vegas fans for the past 17 years with his residency at the Luxor Hotel and Casino. Fans will have the chance to experience his signature his prop his comedy at Bally’s Lake Tahoe on Saturday, January 14th.
Thompson started his career in freshman year when he attended clubs as a student at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and saw stand-up comedy live for the first time. Months later, his roommate convinced him to sign up for an open mic night, and after a few performances that wore him down, he found the comedy bug.
Thompson recently opened up to the Tribune about her love for Lake Tahoe and her life outside of comedy. He has performed in Tahoe many times, but he said that even when he’s not performing, he likes to come over to take a snowboarding vacation. His destination is Heavenly Mountain Resort.
“It’s so beautiful out there. When you take the lift to the top and you’re looking at the lake, it’s so beautiful,” Thompson said. “It’s fun to run and it’s a good time.”
It’s been years since he visited the basin, but he remembers the last time he was here.
“At the time, I had a dog and I remember her jumping into the lake and it was amazing,” said Thompson.
Thompson has over 200 props, and although he brings them all with him on every tour, he makes each set specific to where he’s playing.
When in Lake Tahoe, he said: I have a complete routine about snowboarding and looking like the whole 9 yards with Shaun White. ”
Thompson didn’t say where he thought the funniest crowds were, but said Tahoe had some of the rowdiest crowds.
“There were times when people would bring up a Jagermeister shot to me, but I only remember this once. [in Tahoe], I was like, “No, I can’t do it anymore.” One time it was there, the next it was like 10, the next it was 20… but Tahoe always had good energy.
Thompson is known for her bright red curly hair, hence the name ‘Carrot Top’. When asked if he would disguise himself in public, he replied no.
“I just go out, but people don’t,” he said. “But it’s not like, ‘Oh, that guy looks like Carrot Top,’ it’s more like, ‘That’s Carrot Top.’ It was… this older woman was walking to her car and said, “Oh my god, that’s a great costume.”
Thompson said that if a biopic about his life were to be made, he would like Jason Bateman to play him.
“He’s always very funny. He doesn’t look like me, but I like everything about him,” Thompson said.
When asked if people could take him seriously outside of his comedy, he said yes, but shared one story. So I decided to go through with the show.
“At the end of the show, I toast the crowd with a little toast. I see someone in the crowd come up and take a picture with me. So I’m like, ‘This is for my dad. My father passed away today.” Everyone laughed. So it was awkward once.
Finally, when asked what he wanted his fans to know, he said, “I want them to know that I’m still having fun.”
“It’s great to be back in Tahoe. It’s been a few years since we’ve performed there, so it’s great to be back. Fans are excited to see how the show has evolved over the years.” You can see it,” Thompson said.
