comment: The professional hair care industry has faced major challenges for years, but the COVID-19 pandemic has put the business in jeopardy. According to the Professional Beauty Association, about 72% of hair salon workers live on a paycheck and only have about a month’s worth of savings. Additionally, 23% do not have health insurance.
John Paul Mitchell Systems is the world’s largest privately held professional hair care company. The company’s tools, styling products and dyes are sold at his 150,000 salons and Ulta in over 100 countries. According to COO Jason Yates, about 95% of JPMS’ revenue comes from sales to salons, and 70% of his U.S. business comes from independent salons.
To retain customers until the pandemic subsides, JPMS diverted $4 million allocated to an event celebrating the company’s 40th anniversary in August 2020 in Las Vegas. This money will be used to donate his $4 million worth of free products to be distributed to salon partners. Product allocation depends on a number of factors, including how long the salon has been a customer of JPMS, whether the salon uses only JPMS products, and what size of business the salon represents to JPMS.
“In this most difficult and challenging time in our world and in our industry, John Paul Mitchell Systems is committed to ensuring that you, our salon partner, are at the center of everything we do. We would like to let you know,” in a statement. “In fact, everything we do starts with the question, ‘How does this benefit our salon partners? We have shifted to supporting our partners, our customers.”
Other JPMS initiatives included a free online educational program for stylists and the production of hand sanitizers for medical and other at-risk groups.
