“I’m a firm believer in total expression. When it comes to beauty, it goes much deeper,” says Rivera. “Beauty is, in many ways, the gatekeeper of our relationship to ourselves. And when it comes to women, especially women of color, we’ve spent decades striving to be considered beautiful.” We’ve been taught by the media that we must tame our natural beauty, and we want to turn that script upside down.”
Born and raised in Sweden, Rivera was raised in a “very Hispanic household.” Both of Rivera’s parents were Chilean, but her friends were all Swedish and mostly white. “I’ve always stood out and had a little bit of trouble finding myself and embracing my own natural beauty,” Rivera tells In The Know. is beautiful and makes me want to take care of it with love.In the same way, beauty should be an enhancer, not a limitation.”
Rivera calls herself an “unconventional beauty founder” due to the fact that she made her career in the tech industry rather than the beauty industry. But her Rivera background didn’t stop her from filling a huge hole she noticed in the world of hair care.
“I was craving a new form of beauty. Beauty that would enhance my own natural beauty and make me feel more comfortable in my own skin.” It is this desire to create an approach and increase representation in the Latinx community that drives our maximum spending, but lacks shelf space.”
Representing the Latinx community is at the forefront of Ceremonia’s brand, but Rivera also wants to use her company to “push the boundaries of clean hair care.” We aim to “eliminate the long list of not-so-good ingredients commonly found in beauty products.”
To achieve this, Ceremonia employs a completely in-house production process. “We have our own R&D lab and in-house chemists, and all Ceremonia formulas are created from scratch, replacing common filler ingredients with natural ingredients from Latin America,” Rivera says in The tells Know.
Rivera’s hard work and attention to detail pay off, and Ceremonia’s award-winning hair products speak for themselves. “When they try our product, they realize they are different,” says Rivera. “It feels different, smells different, and gives different results.”
Last year, Ceremonia was listed on Sephora, becoming the first Latino-owned hair business listed in a Sephora store. While Rivera is thrilled with the “incredible” achievement, he notes that it “shows how much work remains to be done in this area.”
While Rivera understands the journey isn’t over, she is grateful for the incredible growth Ceremonia has achieved and looks forward to the future the brand represents in the beauty industry.
“We are proud of all the work our team has put in. We feel it is our responsibility to make the most of this opportunity,” says the proud founder. “We’re really on track to be one of the next big beauty brands, so wouldn’t it be fun for the next big thing in beauty to be Latino?”
