Much has been written about medical tourism over the years. While this is a major reason people choose to go abroad for medical procedures, it is not the only procedure that leads to buying airline tickets and booking hotel rooms. There is another country that has emerged as a destination for those seeking very specific medical procedures, and in this case it is addition rather than subtraction.
Specifically adding hair. In a new article for Air Mail, Max Berlinger chronicles the growing popularity of hair restoration surgery in Turkey. In Berlinger’s words, it is common to see “men walking around with bandaged and bleeding scalps”.
Predicting and treating baldness has been a concern of doctors and scientists for as long as men have been concerned about hair loss. There are several factors at work. That’s the overall low cost of healthcare, combined with the competition among the locations that offer it, to keep costs relatively low.
The article goes on to say that people can find “some of the most cutting-edge technology in the hair transplant industry” in Turkey. A particularly popular choice.
It also led to some memorable images. One of his patients cited in the article described the aftermath of his procedure. “The day after my surgery, I was eating breakfast at the hotel’s big buffet. Half the table was a guy like me, eating alone with a bandage on his head,” he said. told his Air Mail. “It was like the Brotherhood of Bloody Heads or something.”
What are Medical Tourism Destinations? This makes it clear how the perfect storm can happen, even if things get a little complicated.
