st. Paul, Minnesota (WCCO) — The Minnesota Senate will vote Thursday on whether to pass the Crown Act, which prohibits discrimination based on hairstyle.
Capitol lawmakers and community leaders say we need to protect people who choose natural hairstyles such as afros and braids. In 2020, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the Crown Act. However, it did not pass in the Republican-controlled Senate.
Vachel Hudson, who works for the Twin Cities Urban League, told WCCO that he has experienced the problem firsthand.
“My first job was as a salesman. I was told if I cut my hair, I would look prettier and prettier,” he said.
Minnesota isn’t the only state pushing this. At least 14 other states have passed hair discrimination laws.
If the Senate passes it on Thursday, it will go to Gov. Tim Waltz’s desk for signature into law.
